BEANS IN ART AND VICE VERSA by Alison Knowles
Exhibition runs through Saturday, March 31.2012
Alison Knowles, a founding member of fluxus, has produced groundbreaking poetry, events,scores, books, discrete objects, and multiples for the past fifty years. The print, for her, has served as an expression and record of other process-based concerns. Recent experiments with light-sensitive chemicals have produced photographic prints on paper and cloth which are then manipulated by hand. Signal–Return's exhibition space will be imbued with a series of one-of-a-kind cyanotypes, the epic bookwork Bean Frieze, a Bean Turner, as well as an array of other objects, printed books, and suites of prints.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151298/2097671/Outside.2.jpg" width="660" height="358" width_o="660" height_o="358" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151298/2097671/Outside.2_o.jpg" data-mid="12956482"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

     By locating the shop in the Eastern Market, we have placed ourselves in a blossoming crossroads for the larger community. On Saturdays, Eastern Market is abuzz with up to 45,000 visitors. Market operations have just recently been extended to Tuesdays, reflecting a substantial increase in popularity. In addition to offering an abundant harvest of locally-grown food, the neighborhood also satisfies myriad cultural appetites. Folks spill into the Market on bikes via the Dequindre Cut pedestrian corridor that links to the downtown Riverfront. OmniCorpDetroit, a nearby hackerspace, attracts young cultural progressives; while during football season, crowds of Lions fans flock to the market to tailgate.
     The lofts of Eastern Market are home to an eclectic population. Like the butcher shops and processing plants scattered across its six-blocks, many of the shows and events produced here offer experiences that are visceral and hands-on, unrefined and uncut. Currently, many of these shows are often self-promoted or under-promoted. The presence of a design shop will help celebrate the growing area’s strengths, connecting us closely with our immediate neighbors.

   We selected 1345 Division Street as the home of Signal-Return, the space that formerly housed the Johanson-Charles Gallery. The open floorplan of this 3,000 S.F. storefront merges workshops, galleries, exhibition space, archives and retail operations. Award-winning architectural firm M1/DTW has reinvented the space to amplify Signal–Return’s principles: Teach, Serve, Connect and Produce.

Signal–Return seeks to connect the community to traditional + emergent forms of printing as well as offer a resource for entrepreneurial artists + designers to produce for retail clients.

Signal–Return is a creative enterprise at the intersection of art and commerce that combines the back-end production process with a front-end retail store and gallery. Intermingling academics, curation and preservation with apprenticeship, the venue stands as a multi-use center for fine art, design, craft and literary arts.

Our overarching goal is to create a hive for dynamic visual production. By tipping over the barrier that often separates print production from the public eye, process is here made apparent, from composing and proofing, to running an edition and clipping fresh prints to dry on a line.

The collaborative spirit of Signal–Return motivates participants to stretch their reach, as they expand their toolkits, vocabularies and means of production.
