Here is your chance to spend the day learning from Mindell Dubansky, head of book conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! This one-day hands-on workshop has been developed for visual artists and others who are interested in making books and boxes for presenting their work and collections. Several structures will be made and demonstrated—selected for their simplicity, beauty and ability to support, protect and showcase added artwork or documents. The key feature of these album-like books is their ability to accommodate added materials. These structures, developed by Ms. Dubansky and others, are not published so you will not find them in books, all the more reason to join the workshop! Both soft and hard-bound albums will be shown, some with single sheets others with matted pages. Students will learn how to make a simple hard or soft-bound slipcase. In only one day, you might not finish all of the books shown, but the completion of one book, one slipcase, instructional handouts and lots of ideas to follow up on are guaranteed. Bookbinding experience is useful but not necessary. All materials included.

Instructor: Artist and bookbinder, Mindell Dubansky, is head of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Book Conservation, Watson Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is author of numerous book arts related publications, including Blooks: The Art of Books That Aren’t, Book Objects from the Collection of Mindell Dubansky, published in 2016.
