In this workshop, participants will learn about Islamic-world papermaking, and its role in the history of papermaking. The day will be spent with everyone learning the technique of making paper and using it to make their own Islamic-world paper. Simple surface finishing techniques such as brush dyeing, sizing and burnishing will be discussed and examples of traditionally made paper will be shown.
Instructor Bio: Radha Pandey is a graduate with an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she studied Letterpress printing, and Bookbinding with a focus on Western, Eastern and Islamic Papermaking techniques taught by Timothy Barrett. In 2012-14 she traveled to investigate Islamic world papermaking techniques in India, and has since undertaken her own research on the essential tools of Islamic papermaking. Her artist’s books are held in 25 public collections including the Library of Congress and Yale University.
