Price: $170
Class Size: Maximum 8
In this workshop, participants will create single-layer relief prints using woodcut techniques on 6x8 woodblocks. Working with one color allows for a strong focus on bold composition, graphic contrast, and expressive carving.
Relief printmaking has been used across cultures for centuries, including in art, storytelling, and protest. In this class, we’ll explore how a single carved block can produce dynamic images through mark-making, texture, and shape.
Participants should bring 3–5 source images, and we’ll choose one together to develop during the workshop. Emphasis will be on interiors, text-based imagery, simple graphic drawings, portraiture, and abstraction. However please feel free to bring any ideas, sketches, or source images you'd like to work with.
We’ll cover:
Selecting an image suited to single-layer relief
Carving techniques for line, texture, and contrast
Preparing a block for printing
Inking and printing a finished relief print
