This workshop focuses on developing original repeating patterns and translating them into relief woodcuts for seamless printing. It draws from traditional printmaking techniques historically used for wallpaper, textiles, furniture, and decorative interiors.
Students will begin with a floral image, architectural detail, drawing, or other visual reference and learn how to transform it into a seamless repeating pattern by hand through tracing, composition, registration, and repeat construction techniques. The final result will be a single-layer relief block that can be printed repeatedly across the same sheet to create a continuous pattern. Students will walk away with their custom wood block and printed pattern sheets of paper.
This is a wood carving workshop. The prints will be crated on our etching press and printed by hand. Results may vary from reference images.
