Community Programs

Education is the most exciting feature of Signal-Return and is at the heart of everything we do. Whether students are experienced designers and printers, artistically inclined novices, or people who didn’t know what to expect when they first came to the space, they are given the opportunity to learn something new and useful through our workshops. Professional artists teach an expansive range of subjects at both beginning and advanced levels, from the basics of relief printing and working with type to carving linoleum blocks and crafting handmade books. This broad approach to our workshops exposes participants to any conceivable method of working with paper, text, and design and to all manner of working with type and presses. Signal-Return offers workshops, creative programming, and exhibitions on all facets of letterpress printing and visual and literary arts, often combining one ore more of these elements, such as poetry writing with printing. We have an impressive stable of partners from a variety of sectors with whom we collaborate, from arts and cultural organizations like Literary Detroit and Motor Signal, to academic institutions like Oakland University, Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies. We have outfitted Mayor Duggan’s conference room with our art.
