Our Mission:

Letterpress printing is flourishing at Signal-Return as we build a Detroit nonprofit center for arts education, artists and arts enthusiasts.

About Signal-Return

Signal-Return is leading the Detroit revival of letterpress printing—a technology that radically transformed human communication in the 15th century, and an art and a craft appreciated anew in the 21st century. Our space is first and foremost a letterpress print shop that sets the stage for all our programming and activities. Through Signal-Return’s innovative and wide ranging programming—our hands-on arts workshops, Open Studio program, visiting artists, our educational partnerships with universities, elementary and high schools, along with collaborations with other arts and culture organizations—we are supporting an ever-growing Detroit arts community.

In 2011, an empty storefront on Division Street was transformed when Signal Return, dedicated to letterpress printing as a means of artistic expression and communication, opened its doors to the public. We are among a growing number of arts organizations invigorating and supporting an already lively and long standing Detroit neighborhood. In our building that formerly housed egg crate production, we connect with visitors who come to the Eastern Market for locally grown produce and then come into our space to find locally created, well made, original artwork.

We partner with other cultural organizations to offer a wide range of related programming, free and open to the public: poetry readings, book release parties, and exhibitions. Special events are scheduled regularly so check our Events Page here.

In our print studio we work on several proof presses, along with a number of platen presses and sign presses. We have an extensive collection of wood and metal type, along with the means to work with photopolymer plates. Read more about our Workshops and Open Studio opportunities.

In our neighboring retail shop we sell prints, posters, cards and gift items, focusing largely on the work of Detroit-based artists, along work by Michigan and national artists. We also offer a selection of books about letterpress printing. Take a look at our Store here
