This two-session workshop is a special collaborative offering between typeface designer Molly Jacques and Signal-Return artist/printer Joel Grothaus. In Session 1 Molly will instruct participants in the fundamental tools and practices of lettering design to create a lettered phrase or quote. The resulting designs from Session 1 will be turned into letterpress-ready printing plates by Signal-Return for use in Session 2. During Session 2 Joel will teach participants how to print their lettered designs on a proof press. Each participant will produce a small edition of 8 x 10 prints, and will leave with a portfolio of co-participants’ prints. 

Instructors: Molly Jacques is a typographical artist, currently adjunct faculty at the College for Creative Studies. She teaches lettering workshops around the country; her clients include Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Weddings, West Elm and Tiffany and Company.

Joel Grothaus is an artist and designer who also works as Shop Tech at Signal-Return. He graduated in 2010 from the College for Creative Studies with a BFA in Illustration.
